About Numbered Notation

Numbered Notation (also called Jianpu, 简谱) writes each melody note as a number from 1 to 7 instead of a note on a staff. The number shows the note's position in the song's scale -- not its exact pitch -- so the same tune looks identical no matter what key it's sung in.

Within one octave, the numbers 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 correspond to the familiar do re mi fa sol la ti. A dot above a number raises it an octave higher; a dot below lowers it an octave lower -- no dot means the middle, as-written octave.

A plain number lasts one beat. A dash (-) right after a number holds that same note for one more beat. A line underneath a number shortens it instead -- one line is half a beat, two lines a quarter of a beat. A 0 is a rest: silence for one beat.

The label at the top of the sheet, like "1=C" or "1=Ab", shows which pitch scale degree 1 ("do") is tuned to. A song in a minor key is labeled "6=X" instead -- scale degree 6 ("la") is the true tonic. Chord names printed above the notes (like "C" or "G7") always use their familiar letter names, never numbers.

For example, under a "1=C" heading, the numbers 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 sound as C D E F G A B. Under a "1=G" heading, those very same numbers sound as G A B C D E F# instead -- same shape, different key.

Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine;
Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.

This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long.
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long.
2
Perfect submission, perfect delight,
Visions of rapture now burst on my sight;
Angels descending, bring from above
Echoes of mercy, whispers of love.
3
Perfect submission, all is at rest,
I in my Savior am happy and blest;
Watching and waiting, looking above,
Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.

A very good friend of Fanny Crosby was Phoebe Knapp. Fanny lived in the slums of Manhattan and worked in a rescue mission while Phoebe lived in a palatial residence in Brooklyn. Phoebe’s music room contained one of the finest collections of instruments in the country and Fanny was a frequent houseguest. One day in 1873 while Fanny was staying at the Knapp’s residence, Phoebe wanted to play a tune that had been running through her mind. She went to the music room, sat at the piano and played the new composition while her blind friend listened. And then it happened….. Fanny clapped her hands with joy and said to Phoebe that is the tune for “Blessed Assurance! ” Within a few minutes, Fanny had composed the words and one of the greatest hymns of worship was born.

Many years later, the great preacher, D. L. Moody, and his music director Ira Sankey while preaching to large crowds in New York, popularized many of Fanny‘s hymns making her name famous around the world, yet she refused, to be recognized publicly.

One day while attending a Moody Crusade, Fanny slipped into the meeting late to hear Mr. Moody speak. The arena was packed and Fanny could not find a seat anywhere. Seeing what was happening, Moody’s son raced off the stage to help her find a seat. To her bewilderment, she had been led onto the platform just as the crowd was singing Blessed Assurance. Moody Sr. jumped to his feet, raised his hands and interrupted the singing. “Praise the Lord! ” he shouted, “here comes the author of the hymn. ” Fanny was embarrassed, she gave a few short words to thank God for making her a blessing to so many and then reluctantly took her seat again.

While sitting in my room waiting to be discharged, one of my favorite long time hymns came to mind. Blessed Assurance… Knowing that JESUS is my Lord and Savior will always be with me as I FIGHT this battle of Cancer. He will never leave me nor forsake me. I run this Race because the Battle is NOT mine, It’s the LORD’s… Hallelujah!!!
